The Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced that desilting and dredging works on the Odaw River are on track for completion by December 2027.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, June 26, the minister said the project forms part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, which is designed to mitigate flooding and improve storm water management across the Greater Accra Region.
Mr Adjei explained that the contract for the river works began in February 2024 and is being funded through resources allocated under the GARID Project.
“Mr Speaker, the desilting and dredging contract for the Odaw River is being implemented as part of the GARID Project. The project commenced in February 2024 and is expected to be completed by December 2027 with resources allocated under the GARID Project,” he told Parliament.
He noted that routine desilting and dredging are essential measures to improve water flow, reduce silt accumulation, and minimise flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
The minister’s update comes amid persistent concerns over flooding in parts of Accra. Government says ongoing investments under the GARID Project are intended to strengthen the capital’s drainage infrastructure and enhance its resilience to climate-related flooding and other environmental challenges.
