Ghana’s Black Stars delivered a resilient defensive performance to hold England to a goalless draw in their second Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston.
The result leaves both sides level on four points, with England retaining top spot in the group while Ghana remains second ahead of Panama’s clash with Croatia later on Tuesday. Should that match end in a draw, the Black Stars would secure qualification for the Round of 32 before taking on Croatia in their final group-stage fixture on June 27.
England controlled possession for much of the contest but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Ghanaian backline that stayed organised and compact throughout the match. The Three Lions dictated play from the outset, while Ghana focused on defensive solidity and looked to threaten on the counterattack.
England’s early attacking danger came largely through Reece James and Noni Madueke, who linked up effectively down the right side. In the 12th minute, Thomas Partey made a timely intervention to halt a promising move. Despite England completing 283 passes to Ghana’s 54 by the 37th minute, clear-cut chances remained limited.
Declan Rice came closest to scoring before halftime when he connected with a Madueke cross but directed his header over the bar. Ghana, despite spending most of the first half on the defensive, showed attacking intent late in the period when Antoine Semenyo powered past James and won the team’s first corner kick.
Harry Kane nearly gave England the lead in stoppage time, but his effort was blocked by a crowded Ghanaian defence, ensuring the teams went into the break level.
England intensified their pressure after the restart. Anthony Gordon and Djed Spence combined well down the left flank before Jude Bellingham set up Madueke, whose attempt was blocked. Gordon pounced on the loose ball, but goalkeeper Benjamin Asare collected comfortably.
Kane later tested Asare with a low-range effort, while Madueke fired over the crossbar following a scramble near the edge of the box.
Ghana came close to snatching a dramatic winner with just over ten minutes remaining. Mohammed Fatawu drove forward and slipped a pass to Prince Adu, who found himself through on goal. Although a heavy touch allowed England’s defenders to recover, Adu still managed to get a shot away while losing his balance. The effort struck Semenyo before England eventually cleared the danger.
The Black Stars also felt they had grounds for a penalty appeal during the sequence after contact from Ezri Konsa, but the referee waved play on.
England pushed hard for a late breakthrough. Bukayo Saka forced an impressive save from Asare in the 86th minute, while substitute Nico O’Reilly struck the crossbar shortly afterwards. The rebound fell to Kane, but the striker volleyed over from close range, missing what would be England’s final significant opportunity.
At full-time, Ghana celebrated a valuable point earned through determination and defensive discipline, a result that could prove decisive in their pursuit of a place in the knockout rounds.
