Heavy overnight rainfall has caused widespread traffic congestion across Accra on Monday, June 29, with several major roads severely flooded and commuter movement significantly disrupted.

The Director of the Inspectorate Division at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Richard Amuyatey, has advised the public to avoid floodwaters as water levels continue to rise in parts of the capital.

“We are on the ground and responding to all incidents. People should remain indoors where they are to stay safe,” he said.

Mr Amuyatey urged residents not to walk through flooded areas and warned motorists and motorcyclists against driving or riding through submerged roads, stressing that doing so poses a serious threat to life and safety.

He also encouraged commuters stranded across the city to seek safe shelter and delay their journeys until conditions improve. Residents who have not yet left their homes were similarly advised to remain indoors until the flooding subsides.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as persistent rainfall impacts several parts of Accra.

Residents requiring emergency assistance from NADMO can contact the organisation via the national emergency number, 112, or by calling 0302 964 884.
