Security officers in Nkwanta in the Oti Region have seized a substantial cache of ammunition in two separate intelligence-driven operations, resulting in the arrest of two individuals.
In a statement released by the Oti Regional Police Headquarters on May 17, 2026, the first operation led to the interception of a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.
A search of the vehicle revealed 750 live J/G cartridges hidden in a black polythene bag, which contained three brown boxes, each holding 250 rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, a suspect identified as 53-year-old Hudu Mahama, who was acting as the driver’s mate, confessed during initial questioning that the ammunition belonged to him.
In a separate operation carried out the same day, a joint Police and Military team recovered a box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges after it allegedly fell off a suspect’s motorbike during a chase. However, the rider managed to flee with another box of ammunition, according to the statement.
Subsequent investigations resulted in the arrest of a second suspect, identified as 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise.
The police confirmed that both suspects are in custody assisting with ongoing investigations, while efforts are underway to recover the missing ammunition and apprehend the escaped rider.
The Joint Security Taskforce also reiterated its dedication to ensuring peace and security in the area.
