A man entered two schools in Brazil with a semiautomatic pistol and a bulletproof vest. He fatally shot three people, including two teachers, and wounded 11 more before beingetained by law enforcement.
A shooting took place Monday at a public school with elementary and middle school students and a private school, both located on the same street in the small town of Aracruz in Espirito Santo state. The identity of the third person killed was not immediately clear, nor was it known if any students were killed or wounded. Security officials stated Monday that the shooter had escaped.
Security camera footage revealed that the shooter was wearing a bulletproof vest and a semiautomatic pistol when they attacked, Espirito Santo public security secretary Marcio Celante said in a video provided by the secretary of state’s press office
Celante said that two teachers were killed and nine others were injured during the shooting. One of them, he noted, had gained access to the teachers’ lounge by breaking a lock.
The shooter had covered his face, making it difficult to identify him. “It’s possible that he was helped by others,” Celante said.
School shootings are not common in Brazil, but they do happen every few years.
According to a now-deleted social media post, Casagrande said he is monitoring the situation and has sent authorities to investigate.
